Encouragement for the Journey
Greetings fellow traveller,
It is amazing how things you thought you had forgotten and lost within the swirling mists of time, suddenly reappear. Once such reappearance occurred this week. I was reflecting on the wonder and difficulty of communication when the following made its presence felt:
For communication to actually happen requires:
A sender – the person giving out the information;
A message – the information being communicated;
A medium – the format in which the information is being conveyed: i.e. written, oral or electronic;
A recipient – the person receiving the information.
However, the existence of these four factors does not automatically guarantee a successful communication. A communication has only succeeded when the information given by the sender has been received and understood by the recipient. With these dynamics in play, it is amazing that any real communication actually happens between us humans. But, it does….
I regularly reflect on how I communicate, in both verbal and written forms. I readily admit at times I fail to communicate, while at other moments I am surprised communication happens.
Within a community of faith, how we communicate is very important. Sometimes, we hear and understand, other times we hear, but don’t understand, while there are other times, we need clarification and fail to ask questions to help us to understand.
Next Sunday is our Focus Forward a time for communicating. I am curious, are you aware it is taking place? For your presence there is both important and welcomed. We will be gathering here at St Aidans at 9.0 am for a 9.30 am start, please see my letter and the Informer for more details. I look forward to seeing you here, hearing you and your ideas and thoughts for our Community of St Aidans.
Meanwhile peace in our communicating
