Encouragement for the Journey

 stairs to the light

Greetings fellow traveller,

This week I find myself writing about the moments of darkness we enter, while travelling along the journey.

I don’t mean those times when there is a power outage at night and we suddenly find ourselves sitting in the dark. We fumble around to find a torch, alas, the batteries are flat and we have no candles. So we open the curtains to see if there are lights on at our neighbours home. No lights on, it must be an outage. We feel our way back to our familiar chair. The room becomes very different for darkness has arrived suddenly and unexpectedly.

The darkness I am reflecting on also arrives suddenly and unexpectedly and we find ourselves walking in the darkness for a while. I am unable to offer you a complete list of these darkness moments, other than to say; the darkness will arrive when we least expect it. It is walking outside the familiar, the comfortable, and what we can control, like when sickness arrives suddenly, or when death comes unexpectedly to someone we love, or anything that brings uncertainty into our lives. In these moments, life becomes tentative; anxiety arrives, we become fearful of what is happening in our life or in the life of another human traveller. In these times we create all kinds of scenarios in our mind of what might be, often these may never happen, but often we think the worst.

It’s in these moments we may question the absence of the One we name as God. For in the Christian tradition, darkness has been strongly associated with, sin, ignorance and it is not OK or acceptable to be walking in the darkness. Consequently, our faith and beliefs are challenged.

In this article and today in my reflection I want to reclaim that in our walking in the darkness, we may well feel the absence or the obscurity of God. Yet, in that absence we will discover, less answers but more questions, along with a new transformation of presence, and a trusting of God, in the absence of a sense of God.

Meanwhile in the light and the darkness

Alf
